Druščina Zlate ostroge is a group of individuals that share one major interest – the Middle Ages. The Company’s main goal is re-enacting the life of a group of paid men between 1460 in 1480. We do not represent knights or noblemen but ordinary people serving in an army of some minor lord on the territory of the present-day Slovenia. The chosen social milieu enables us to portray different aspects of life in the late medieval period, since a military camp with its craftsmen and families accompanying soldiers was an almost self-contained social group. These time limits apply solely to the military camp re-enactment since the narrow definition of the era enables greater authenticity and uniformity of the group. The research which is the basis for the re-enactment is however not prone to such rigorous chronological restraints but must, on the contrary, take in a broader context, inside of which the interpretation of sources takes place, if we want to achieve reliable reconstruction. Our reconstruction is based on the principle of living history. Living history is history revived; it is also a type of an open air museum where visitors can feel the precise pulse of a certain moment in human history. To produce such an effect every object or piece of clothing we use undergoes critical judgement based on authentic sources and findings of various sciences (iconography, history, archaeology etc.). Even so, the Company are aware of the epistemological insufficiency in the process of historical reconstruction that often demands quite a lot of imagination and compromise.

We are still at the beginning in our endeavours. However, even though re-enactment is a process that never reaches perfection, we believe that in time we will be able to show increasingly more genuine insight into the late medieval period.

The above guidelines have been directing the Company and its activities since 2007 but the society was established already back in 1998. During all these years, we have participated at various events among which the highlights are the cooperation with the National Museum of Slovenia, the Museum of Gorenjska and the participation at the Bellum Viritim camp in Ortenburg (AT).
